THIS TAUT & GRIPPING THRILLER TELLS THE STORY OF DEVOTEDPARENTS WHO ARE WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO RESURRECT THEIR BELOVED SON WHO WAS TRAGICALLY KILLED IN A FREAK ACCIDENT.While it preys on the emotions of grieving parents, Godsend serves up a few minor shocks in an otherwise frightless supernatural thriller. Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos are the once-happy couple whose 8-year-old son (Cameron Bright) has been struck and killed by a car. When a fertility and genetics expert (Robert De Niro) offers them an opportunity to resurrect their boy through a secret, illegal cloning procedure, they don't know that the doctor's hidden agenda will have horrifying repercussions when the "new" son! passes his eighth birthday and begins having "night terrors" about another boy who'd suffered a similarly unfortunate fate. Any casual viewer will catch the plot twist early, after which Godsend presses its flimsy premise past the breaking point. There are some eerie moments involving the kid (and Bright has effectively disturbing presence), but wretched dialogue and derivative plotting undermine the talented leads, all of whom seem to be slumming in the B-movie cellar. --Jeff Shannonrian Cathcart, a 27-year-old black man, is a private investigator of a different sort. He only takes serious cases that the police have abandoned. When asked what kind of laws he might break, Brian counted on his fingers while saying, "Illegal phone taps, bribery, extortion, assault, blackmail, threats--"

After solving a missing persons case, which turned out to be a 12-year-old homicide, Brian hardly has time to celebrate. His girlfriend is killed and his assistant is! shot in the chest, so he wants to close Godsend Private Inves! tigation s before the agency can even get started good. But then something changes his mind: A wealthy couple offers him $600,000 for the return of a kidnapped child. And since Brian himself is the father of an adorable little girl, he decides that his agency shoud exist as a necessary evil. This time he may break a law called homicide.rian Cathcart, a 27-year-old black man, is a private investigator of a different sort. He only takes serious cases that the police have abandoned. Burn After Reading

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • AC-3; Color; Dolby; Dubbed; DVD; Subtitled; Widescreen; NTSC

Genre: Comedy
Rating: R
Release Date: 23-DEC-2008
Media Type: DVDAfter the dark brilliance of No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading may seem like a trifle, but few filmmakers elevate the trivial to art quite like Joel and Ethan Coen. Inspired by Stansfield Turner's Burn Before Reading, the comically convoluted plot clicks into gear when the CIA gives analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) the boot. Little does Cox know his wife, Katie (Tilda Swinton, riffing on her Michael Clayton character), is seeing married federal marshal Harry (George Clooney, Swinton's Clayton co-star, playing off his Syriana role). To get back at the Agency, Cox works on his memoirs. Through a twist of fate, fitness club workers ! Linda (Frances McDormand) and Chad (Brad Pitt in a pompadour that recalls Johnny Suede) find the disc and try to wrangle a "Samaratin tax" out of the surly alcoholic. An avid Internet dater, Linda plans to use the money for plastic surgery, oblivious that her manager, Ted (The Visitor's Richard Jenkins), likes her just the way she is. Though it sounds like a Beltway remake of The Big Lebowski, the Coen entry it most closely resembles, this time the brothers concentrate their energies on the myriad insecurities endemic to the mid-life crisis--with the exception of Chad, who's too dense to share such concerns, leading to the funniest performance of Pitt's career. If Lebowski represented the Coen's unique approach to film noir, Burn sees them putting their irresistibly absurdist stamp on paranoid thrillers from Enemy of the State to The Bourne Identity. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
