Illeana Douglas (born July 25, 1965) is an American actress, director, screenwriter, and producer. The only daughter of Gregory Hesselberg, a painter, and his wife, the former Joan Georgescu, Illeana Douglas was born Illeana Hesselberg in Quincy, Massachusetts; she grew up Haddam, Connecticut - where she graduated at age 18 in 1983 - after her parents' divorce. She is a granddaughter of the actor Melvyn Douglas and his first wife, artist Rosalind Hightower, and has said that her grandfather's performance in Being There, in particular, was influential on her own career. Douglas has two brothers, Stefan Gregor Hesselberg (1958 - 2003) and Eri! k Hesselberg, editor of River & Shore, a Connecticut quarterly magazine. Her step-grandmother was actress and politician Helen Gahagan Douglas, her step-grandfather was author James Benjamin Aswell Jr., and her paternal great-grandfather was Latvian-born composer and pianist Edouard Hesselberg. She is of Italian descent on her mother's side. The traditions of old-fashioned melodrama are given a hip facelift in this homage to the Brill Building era (the late 1950s to the early 1970s) of pop-music glory, providing a perfect match between writer-director Allison Anders and her excellent cast. Illeana Douglas plays a singer-songwriter (loosely modeled after Brill recording artist Carole King) whose life runs emotionally parallel to popular music trends. John Turturro is a stand-in for "wall of sound" producer Phil Spector and Matt Dillon is a thinly disguised version of maverick Beach Boy Brian Wilson. It's a bit too schematic in the way the central character is always in the ri! ght place at the right time, but as a tale of fame and romanti! c highs and lows in the '50s and '60s the movie is funny, touching, and sincere. It's a lively and loving tribute to timeless music and the colorful characters who created it. --Jeff Shannon GRACE OF MY HEART - DVD MovieThe traditions of old-fashioned melodrama are given a hip facelift in this homage to the Brill Building era (the late 1950s to the early 1970s) of pop-music glory, providing a perfect match between writer-director Allison Anders and her excellent cast.
